Samuel Gerrish Wyman, Builder of the Brexton
Mr. Samuel Gerrish Wyman was born in 1807. The Wyman family has deep roots in New England, two Wymans among the original settlers of Woburn, Massachussetts in 1640.
Sam Wyman died on March 6, 1883, only a year and a half after the Brexton was announced. He had no children, and his estate, valued at $1.25 million, was distributed among relatives and friends. The Brexton itself became the property of the Mary Byrd Wyman Fund, a charity dedicated to the "education of girls of respectable but needy parents."
